We believe home design should be stylish and distinctive. From the statement appeal of a chandelier to the artisanal feel of a woven ceiling lamp, intentional ceiling lighting helps elevate a space, making it personalized to you. At Lulu and Georgia, our thoughtfully-curated collection of ceiling light fixtures is perfect for your home, beautifully blending form and function.

Lighting elements—and ceiling lighting fixtures especially—are sometimes treated as an afterthought in home decor, but brilliant design can languish under poor lighting. Taking time to select ceiling fixtures that reflect your aesthetic and augment a space is a crucial part of defining the look and feel of your home.

Not sure what style fits your space best when searching for ceiling lights? Don’t worry, we have got you covered. Check out the tips below for ideas and inspiration as you choose the best ceiling fixtures to buy for your space.

How to Create Impact with Overhead Lighting

When we think of good lighting design, we think of layering light from different sources throughout the room. You can use ceiling light fixtures for almost every purpose, whether filling the room or lighting a specific area. As you start thinking about how overhead lighting can bring life and definition to your space, it can be helpful to think in terms of impact. Designers usually talk about three lighting categories—ambient light, task light, and accent light.

Every space needs a primary pool of ambient light to fill the room; ceiling light is perfect for this. Whether it’s with a large central element or an arrangement of a few smaller ones, filling the space with overhead light is like laying a foundation that you can build a layered lighting scheme on top of.

Task light is bright, functional light that’s directed for a specific purpose. We often think of reading lamps or adjustable sconces, but a ceiling light fixture can also provide task light, such as a bright downlight over your kitchen island or table. Accent lighting is generally used to highlight some feature or artwork, as with a picture light. You can use directed ceiling light like this to define space or augment architectural elements, especially in a large or open-plan area.

Shopping Ceiling Light Fixtures by Type

In most cases, you’ll be working with upgrading or swapping out a ceiling light fixture that has already been placed. For different lighting schemes and arrangements then, it can be helpful to break down lighting styles by type to help you shop.

Chandeliers

Chandeliers are first and foremost design statements—they provide a brilliant pool of ambient light with an eye-catching silhouette. From adding grandeur to an entryway to creating a focal point in your dining room, lounge, or even bedroom, chandeliers are a showstopping way to transform your overhead space.

Whether you are in the market for something utterly modern or timeless and classic, we have designs that will add instant character to your decor—find the best of both worlds with something like our Midford Chandelier for transitional appeal.

Pendant Lights

Pendants come in all shapes and sizes—from signature hanging ceiling lights to stemmed designs used for task light in a kitchen or dining area. Pendants are often arranged in multiples, but a large pendant light styled alone can provide the same statement appeal as a chandelier—the difference being that pendants typically feature standard bulbs rather than candelabra bulbs as with a chandelier or ceiling lamp.

We’re loving the trend of linear designs like this Axton Linear Pendant Light—they’re the perfect fit for a kitchen island or long dining table.

Flush Mounts

Flush Mount and semi-flush mounts can offer the same ambient effect as pendant light but with a lower profile design ideal for rooms with lower ceilings. That doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style, though. From opal glass globes to brass-finished cylinders, there are endless ways to let your designer’s eye shine with flush mount lighting.

Something like this Malibu Flush Mount Light by Regina Andrew can offer the same ornate appeal of a hanging ceiling light with a more compact profile.

Other Ceiling Fixtures

Sometimes other design considerations need to be taken into account. If you’re choosing lighting elements for a covered porch or terrace, you want to make sure you’re purchasing outdoor lights which are damp-rated to weather the elements. Or perhaps you need the added functionality of a ceiling fan that can provide ambient light while moving air around to keep your space as fresh as it looks.

It’s good to consider all your options when upgrading or installing any ceiling light fixture, but it’s also important to check specifications and consult a professional before purchasing.

Whichever way you style it, remember that ceiling lighting allows you the flexibility to showcase the nuances of your design aesthetic. Loved ones and visitors can immediately get a sense of who you are by seeing how you have augmented your space with thoughtfully chosen ceiling light fixtures.
