A lumbar or bolster pillow does something a square throw pillow cannot: it anchors a sofa arrangement along its horizontal axis, adds a finishing layer to the front of a bed, or introduces a contrasting shape that makes a grouping of pillows feel considered rather than collected. At Lulu and Georgia, the long lumbar and bolster collection spans printed and embroidered linen lumbars, velvet and textured woven styles, cylindrical bolsters, and artisan-made pieces in a range of proportions and patterns.
What lumbar and bolster pillow sizes does Lulu and Georgia carry?
The collection includes standard lumbars (approximately 14×36 inches), long and oversized lumbars (14×50 and similar), and cylindrical bolster styles in multiple lengths and diameters. Covers are typically sold separately from inserts; inserts are available in coordinating sizes. For a sofa, one lumbar centered at the front of a pillow arrangement finishes the row. For a bed, a long lumbar or bolster in front of the sleeping pillows adds a hotel-quality layer.
How do I style a lumbar pillow on a sofa?
Place the lumbar at the center front of the sofa arrangement — in front of or between the larger square pillows. It should contrast with the pillows behind it in either color, pattern, or material. A printed or embroidered lumbar against solid square pillows works particularly well; a textured woven lumbar adds dimension to a monochromatic arrangement. On a two-seat sofa or loveseat, a single lumbar at the center is often all that’s needed.
Can lumbar pillows be used on a bed?
Yes — a long lumbar across the front of a bed, in front of the sleeping pillows and shams, is one of the cleaner and more refined ways to finish a bed without a large number of decorative pillows. A 14×50-inch lumbar works across a king bed; a standard 14×36-inch lumbar centers well on a queen. Choose a pattern or texture that ties together the duvet and any euro shams behind it for a cohesive layered look.
