A (Quick) Guide to Chandelier Lighting Styles

We like to think of lighting as the jewelry of the room—and a chandelier is the crown. From a linear design over your kitchen island to a tone-setting statement in your living room, chandeliers offer a brilliant source of ceiling light while creating a point of interest with dimension and texture overhead.

Chandeliers have long been a staple of ornamental lighting, dating back to the candlelit frames suspended over dining halls and ballrooms. Traditional chandeliers today reflect these styles—from rustic ring designs for farmhouse edits to baroque glass and brass pieces that float over the room like candelabra. Some traditional chandelier designs, such as this white gesso Calina Chandelier, offer a transitional look that can be styled from cool coastal edits to French country curations. It could even fold into a minimalist edit for a unique touch of texture.

Modern chandeliers remix these elements into bold new designs. This movement toward reimagining chandelier lighting began with mid-century statement chandeliers, such as Sputnik designs—so named for their starburst silhouette resembling the famous satellite. Our Alfaro Chandelier offers a play on this concept with an arrangement of globe lights perched on sleek spokes. Other designs can strike artful appeal overhead with even more sculptural silhouettes that become functional art in your home. Contemporary chandeliers can also include practical plays on form—such as linear chandeliers, designed to offer a row of light over a hallway or kitchen with a sleek look.

Some chandeliers are defined more by their material and texture than a distinctive shape or era. Right now (and always), we’re loving woven chandeliers. These pieces offer artisan texture and natural warmth overhead that can be styled to a variety of aesthetics from eclectic havens to open coastal escapes. The Harlan Chandelier features a basket-weave ring with buckled leather straps inspired by everyday elements from the Argentinian plains. Whether it's rustic warmth or an airy open feel you’re going for—woven chandeliers combine an organic touch with the splendor of statement lighting.

Room by Room: How to Use A Chandelier In Your Design

The style of a piece is only half the story. How it folds into and elevates your home is the essence of interior design—and nobody knows your space and your taste better than you. Think about the room as a whole; even overhead lighting should be in conversation with the other elements in the room, such as colors, textures, and silhouettes. But don’t be afraid to go bold—if you’re looking for a statement, make it a statement that comes from you. With that in mind, let’s look room by room at how a chandelier can create impact in your design.

Entryway Chandeliers

There’s no place to start like the foyer. A statement chandelier in your entryway can set the tone for elevated design—inviting guests in and you home with a bold expression of your style. Entryways are by definition high-traffic spaces. In addition to leaving clearance for people to move, you want to make sure the chandelier does not obstruct any doors.

Living Room Chandeliers

Living rooms call for a layered lighting approach but they also call for some flair. A living room chandelier can serve as a brilliant focal point, complementing other elements such as sconces and lamps. In a taller room, multi-tiered chandeliers can help define space overhead. You can use our filters to shop chandeliers by height.

Dining Room Chandeliers

A dining room chandelier will typically be centered over your table—this helps highlight it as the room’s anchor piece. The chandelier should be about 3’ above your table (higher in a room with a taller ceiling), and the diameter should be about ½ to ⅔ the width of the table. Linear chandeliers or two smaller chandeliers can be mounted over a longer table. In an open-concept layout, a chandelier over the dining area can help set off the space from the rest of the living area.

Kitchen Chandeliers

Kitchen lighting is all about bright, functional task lights, but who says bright and functional can’t come with some serious style? Linear chandeliers are perfect over a kitchen island—the chandelier should be between ⅓ to ⅔ the length of the counter. Similar to an open-concept layout, a kitchen chandelier can be something chic and understated to set off a dining nook.

Bedroom Chandeliers

We typically style bedroom lighting for its warmth or subtlety. But a bedroom chandelier can transform your bedroom into a tranquil sanctuary. Whether it’s centered in the room, over the bed, or setting off a seating area in a larger layout, a chandelier can play to an intimate space just as well as a grand one. We love woven designs and soft silhouettes that invite a more serene feel.

Finding the Right Size Chandelier for the Room

Another essential element in shopping for chandeliers is finding the right size for your space. Large statement chandeliers can seem awkward and overbearing in a smaller room or as a dining room chandelier. In contrast, a small black chandelier or light fixture, which may be perfect for an apartment or cozy space, can seem underwhelming and flat in an open-plan or larger room.

The general rule for sizing a living room chandelier is to take the width and length of the room in feet and add them together. After changing the unit to inches, this sum is approximately the size of the chandelier you will want. So, in a 10' by 15' room, a chandelier fixture should be about 25" in diameter. You then want 2.5" to 3" per foot of the room's height. So you can simply take the room's height in feet, multiply the number by three, and change the unit to inches. In a 12' high room, you want a chandelier about 36" in height.

A dining room chandelier is typically styled directly above the dining table. In this case, you want a fixture about two-thirds the table's width. This will be about a foot less than the width of most dining tables. While a large fixture can offer plenty of eye-catching impact, you might consider styling two smaller chandeliers over a larger table for symmetrical appeal.

Whichever way you decide to style it, remember that a chandelier allows you the flexibility to showcase the nuances of your design aesthetic. A well-placed lounge chandelier or a chic duo over your dining table can reinvigorate your decor with a bold overhead statement. Flawlessly refined designs help add a dynamic dimension to your space. Be daring and intentional with your aesthetic by choosing lighting elements you love.
