The checkerboard has been a pattern in textiles and interiors for centuries — and its appeal is unchanged: graphic, confident, and capable of making a room feel both playful and rigorous at once. At Lulu and Georgia, the checkerboard and grid rug collection brings together classic check patterns, micro-grid and plaid interpretations, oversized buffalo check, and tone-on-tone grid rugs in wool, cotton, and natural fiber — in a range of color combinations from monochrome to multicolor.
What checkerboard and grid rugs does Lulu and Georgia carry?
The collection includes classic two-color checkerboard rugs in wool and flatweave cotton, oversized buffalo and windowpane check patterns, micro-grid and linear stripe variations, tone-on-tone textural grid rugs in natural fiber, and contemporary interpretations in black-and-white, tan-and-cream, and color combinations. Sizes range from small accent to large area rug; runner sizes are available in select patterns.
What rooms work best with a checkerboard rug?
Checkerboard rugs are particularly effective in entryways, kitchens, dining rooms, and studies — spaces where the pattern reads as intentional and graphic rather than visually fatiguing. In a living room, a large checkerboard in a muted two-tone palette functions as a classic pattern without overwhelming the space. In a bedroom, a tone-on-tone or small-scale check reads as textural rather than bold. The pattern works best when the rest of the room is kept relatively calm.
How do I style furniture on a checkerboard rug?
Let the checkerboard be the statement and keep furniture simple. The pattern is strong enough to carry the room without additional competition from heavily patterned upholstery or bold wallpaper. Solid-colored furniture in natural linen, white, or charcoal sits well on a graphic check. For a more layered look, introduce pattern in throw pillows or a blanket in a colorway drawn from the rug — the rug should remain the dominant visual element.
