A drawing brings something to a wall that a photograph or print cannot quite replicate: the evidence of a hand working deliberately across a surface. At Lulu and Georgia, the drawing collection spans original works on paper, limited-edition prints, and artist multiples in pencil, graphite, ink, charcoal, pastel, and mixed media — from emerging and established artists working in a range of scales. Work chosen for quality of observation and the kind of presence that holds attention on a wall.
What drawing and works on paper does Lulu and Georgia carry?
The collection includes original drawings in pencil, graphite, ink, charcoal, and mixed media on paper and board; limited-edition artist prints and lithographs; and artist multiples in small editions. Subjects span figure and portrait work, abstract and mark-making studies, botanical and nature subjects, and architectural and landscape references. Work is available in a range of sizes from small studies to larger works intended as focal pieces.
How do I display drawings and works on paper?
Works on paper are typically framed under glass to protect the surface from humidity, light, and handling. UV-filtering glass or acrylic is strongly recommended for pencil, charcoal, and pastel works, which are particularly sensitive to fading and smudging. Hang away from direct sunlight and moisture. Grouping several smaller works at consistent mat borders in a gallery arrangement is an effective way to give a collection of drawings visual weight equivalent to a single larger piece.
Are original drawings a good investment as a starting art collection?
Works on paper — drawings and prints — are among the most accessible entry points into art collecting. They tend to be less expensive than paintings of comparable size by the same artist, and many artists produce their most personal and exploratory work on paper. For a first-time buyer, acquiring an original work in a medium you’re drawn to is more important than investment consideration. Buy what you want to live with; the enjoyment compounds in a way that market value rarely does.
