A shag rug does something no other rug category can: it makes a room feel softer underfoot and quieter acoustically in a way that’s immediately noticeable. At Lulu and Georgia, the shag rug collection spans high-pile wool, cotton-and-wool blends, natural and plant-fiber options, and contemporary low-shag styles in a range of textures and tones. Rugs chosen for the way they transform the feel of a room — particularly in spaces where comfort and sensory quality matter most.
What shag rugs does Lulu and Georgia carry?
The collection includes high-pile wool shag rugs, cotton-pile and mixed-fiber options, natural fiber shag styles in jute and sisal variations, and lower-profile shag rugs that give texture without deep pile. Sizes range from small accent rugs to large area rugs suitable for living rooms and primary bedrooms. Many styles are available in neutral and warm tones; select colorful options are available for nurseries and playrooms.
How do I clean a shag rug?
Regular shaking outdoors and vacuuming with a suction-only attachment (not a beater bar, which can damage pile fibers) keeps a shag rug in good condition. Spot-clean spills immediately with a clean cloth and mild detergent; blot rather than rub. Most wool shag rugs should be professionally cleaned annually for a deep clean. Avoid machine washing unless the product page specifically notes it is machine-washable. A rug pad prevents slipping and keeps the pile from flattening prematurely.
Are shag rugs suitable for high-traffic areas?
Shag rugs are generally best suited for lower-traffic spaces — bedrooms, reading corners, nurseries — where they can be appreciated for comfort and texture without heavy foot traffic compressing the pile. For entryways, dining rooms, and high-use living rooms, a flat-weave or low-pile rug holds up better over time. If using a shag rug in a moderate-traffic space, rotate it quarterly and vacuum regularly to prevent pile matting in one area.
